Dr. Donald Raymond Strong, the editor-in-chief of the journal Ecology and the professor of Evolution and Ecology (University of California Davis) visited CAS South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) with his wife on 21st October 2010, at the invitation of Dr. Shenglei Fu, the deputy director of SCBG.
During the visit, Prof. Strong presented two academic reports at the seminar, which was presided over by Dr. Fu. And more than 40 researchers and postgraduates on ecology attended the seminars. By using Spartina as an example, Prof. Strong presented the first report which named as Invasive Spartina: Ecological Misadventures, illustrating the spatial-temporal patterns of the invasion of Spartina alterniflora at west coast of the USA from the angles of traits, introduction history of the species, ecology, genetics and molecular biology. The causes of such biological invasion, the reasons of its success, and the possible mechanism that affects the pervading speed of the invasion were also discussed. Meanwhile, he briefly introduced the invasion situation of Spartina in Chinese coastal zones, and reckoned the possible mechanism of its pervasion. And heated discussion followed.
Later, Prof. Strong presented his second report entitled Publishing in the Journals of the Ecological Society of America. The report mainly introduced the overall characteristics, peer review and development of the serial publications of Ecological Society of America. And it also introduced the vision and the topics of soliciting contributions of the newly started Ecosphere by comparing the feature between the five publications (Ecospher, Ecology, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, and Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment), which belong to ESA. The skills of contributing these five academic journals were also introduced.
After the seminar, Mr and Mrs Strong visited the attractions of the scenic areas of SCBG in high spirits.
